Weddings

We are delighted that you are considering being married at one of our beautiful churches here in Whakatipu.

A wedding in the Anglican Church is a Christian celebration of marriage — a joyful and sacred occasion where two people make their vows before God, supported by their family, friends, and often the wider Church community. The marriage is presided over by an ordained Anglican priest, and couples can choose one of three marriage ceremonies from the NZ Anglican Prayer Book.

Because marriage is a lifelong covenant, we ask all couples preparing for marriage in our churches to take part in a short pre-marriage course with our vicar, or with their own minister. This helps couples reflect together and prepare for the promises they will make. These sessions can be held in person or online.

If you would like to find out more, or to enquire about dates availability and costs, please get in touch with our parish office (admin@stpeters.co.nz). We would love to hear from you and help you take the next steps toward your wedding day.

St Peter’s

Situated in the heart of Queenstown, marriages have been celebrated at this historic stone church for over 150 years. Seating approximately 120 people, with magnificent stained-glass windows and landscaped gardens, it is greatly loved by both the local community and the 2 million+ visitors who come through Queenstown every year.

St Paul’s

A category 1 NZ Historic Places Trust church, St Paul’s seats approximately 70 people and was built in 1871 during the gold mining rush. It’s size makes it an intimate setting for weddings. With a modern stained glass window above the altar depicting the trees, hills and valleys of the area and the gold from which the town sprang. It is a very peaceful place with little traffic and plenty of parking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wedding service cost?

Our Service fee includes the time for our Parish Vicar, the use of the church for the rehearsal and the sole use of the church for your wedding day.

Please contact our office Administrator Tina to enquire about dates and Service Charges on admin@stpeters.co.nz

To book your wedding a $300 deposit is required (refundable three or more months prior to your wedding). Once the booking date is confirmed we will send an invoice for the deposit. This then secures the booking

The balance is invoiced a month prior and payment due within 7 days of invoice.

Are there restrictions on when a wedding can be booked?

You may book your wedding for any day of the week, with the exception of Sunday’s, Christmas Day, and Holy Week (the week before Easter). We also do not accept wedding bookings for the week before or week after Christmas. We do suggest you make any bookings well in advance particularly for St Peter’s in Queenstown.

Do I have any say about the ceremony?

The services are based on the NZ Anglican services. There is flexibility in the choice of prayers, readings, music and other elements. You may have a Nuptial Mass, Candle Lighting, or other special features you would like to include. These can be discussed with the presiding priest when arranging the wedding. Your wedding ceremony usually takes about 35 minutes. If you need more time please discuss when booking.

What decorations can I use?

For fresh flower arrangements we recommend contacting any local florist in Queenstown and request they coordinate with the Church office. There is a Parish flower coordinator for the St Paul’s Church in Arrowtown. We also have some lovely silk flower arrangements in both the Churches as an alternative.

Our candlesticks are placed on the altar and lit during wedding ceremonies. You are welcome to tie ribbon or flowers to the ends of the pews (seats), however, please do not use Sellotape or Bluetack to secure them, as it can damage the wood.

What about music?

Usually you would have music for a processional (bride walking down the aisle), the signing of the register and the recessional (the bridal couple leaving the church). We leave you to arrange a pianist or alternatively recorded music.

We do have a basic sound system allowing you to attach bluetooth music through.

One or more suitable hymns are sometimes sung at a Marriage Service.

Can photographs be taken in the church?

Guests are very welcome to take photos unless requested not to do so by the couple.

Photographers and video camera operators should speak to the officiating minister before the service. This is a courtesy to both the minister and the bridal party. Photographers must make their own parking arrangements and may not park on the grounds of St Peter’s Church

Preparation for Marriage Course?

Taking time out to reflect on your relationship is a vital part of preparing for marriage,  therefore we ask all couples who are getting married in the Whakatipu Anglican Parish to participate in marriage preparation sessions to discuss aspects of sharing your lives together. This can be done in a few ways.  If you live locally then this is completed with a couple of in person sessions with our Vicar. If you live away from Queenstown this can be done by Zoom or via your own local Priest in your home town / city who confirms that a marriage preparation course has been completed.  It is important that you have an early discussion at the time of booking with our Vicar on how you might wish to facilitate this course.

Can confetti be used?

Fresh or dried rose petals are an acceptable alternative for confetti on the grass areas only. Confetti, Rice and Paper Bombs are not allowed. Bubbles are also an option.
